If you're on the local link, you can hear it. Certain operations, like getting your buddy icon, do run over XML-RPC as a point to point operation. This is just for testing at this point. Just using the local link doesn't scale well and I'm sure there are situations where we would want to use a server as a mediator. We'll be refining this over the coming weeks.
