LX vs. GX

Matthew is completely right about the difference between the LX and the GX.  It’s not just about clock speed.  There are also huge differences on the video side of the house.  The LX supports accelerated rotation, can convert between different bit depths, and the the size difference between the caches has a vast impact on the performance of software on the machine.  You don’t know what the GX is like until you’ve tried to use it.

Not to mention, the LX fixes most of the evils flaws that vex us with the GX (YUV gamma issue, CPU snoop issue, etc). Plus, the pipeline is much better, and it has some new toys, like a random number generator an AES encryption engine, and on chip NVRAM storage.

For those of us without an XO, “how slow is the GX?” has been a constant question when designing software. I finally found some numbers:

Pentium MMX 233: 303 MIPS, 259 MFLOPS, 1111 MMX MIPS, 279 MMX MFLOPS
Pentium II 233: 795 MIPS, 309 MFLOPS, 1532 MMX MIPS, 578 MMX MFLOPS
Geode GX 533: 647 MIPS, 212 MFLOPS, 1019 MMX MIPS, 1332 MMX MFLOPS

Is there a chance for XO to use Geode LX and 256MB Ram ?
